How often do you end your work days feeling completely drained before you’ve even made it home? After juggling different tasks for hours at work, the idea of doing something simple such as making dinner or getting a load of laundry done can feel daunting. But letting that kind of stress build up isn’t just bad for your overall mental health, it can even lead to pesky problems like weight gain. Luckily, there could be an easy way to avoid that rundown feeling with a simple 10-minute switch-up.
Gretchen Rubin, a best-selling author and expert on all things happiness, spoke with CNBC Make It and shared how one important habit at the end of your day can make a huge difference. “At the end of my work day, I take 10 minutes and kind of put everything away that I can,” she explained, “I don’t do deep cleaning or deep clutter cleaning, but I will put things in their places.”
The idea is that this exercise will help balance out your work and home life, plus set yourself up to start the following day without a list of frustrating little chores getting in your way. “Creating this transition makes it easier to turn off my work brain and turn on my home brain, because I’ve given myself a little cushion,” she added.
She swears by saving some time at the end of your day to take care of things like clearing out your inbox, cleaning off your desk, and making a note of your appointments for the next day — or whatever small responsibilities you tend to put off until the morning. Rubin compared this to how we were encouraged to take similar transitional periods as kids. For instance, most of us remember being told by our teachers to tidy our desk and stack our chairs before leaving for the day. That habit seems to be something we lose as we got older, instead rushing from one task to the next without much of a pause.
