Buttery and flaky scones are always a delightful treat, especially when paired with tea. It’s no surprise that every time we buy these tasty baked goods, we feel so tempted to make our own at home. However, this little cooking daydream of ours is a bit more complicated in reality. Between struggling to cut into cold butter and peeling the sticky dough that never seems to come off our hands, whipping up a homemade batch of scones can seem like a lost cause. But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way anymore — and all thanks to baking expert Monique Bowley of The Great Australian Bakeoff.
As Bowley demonstrates in a captivating video originally posted on Mamamia, it’s actually possible to create a quick and simple scone recipe by using just three ingredients: self-raising flour, cream, and a can of lemon-lime soda (though we agree, that last one may seem like a strange addition at first).
The soda (which is called “lemonade” down under) isn’t the only head-scratching part of Bowley’s instructions. Even though many scone recipes recommend using a wooden spoon to mix the ingredients together, Bowley suggests that we use a knife instead. Keeping a bit of mystery intact, Bowley doesn’t explain why she recommends we ignore that age-old kitchen tradition.
We have to say that after seeing the divine texture of her finished product, we’re more than happy to skip all of our questions.
