This Common Kitchen Tool Can Also Make Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Juice

Tags:

Every January, I’m tempted to buy a juicer, thanks to post-holiday sales. But with all the other gadgets taking up space in my kitchen, from my trusty air fryer to my stand mixer, I’m reluctant to give up any more countertop real estate to a new appliance. Luckily, this year I can resist temptation more easily, because I recently learned how to make fresh fruit and vegetable juice at home using a French press!

Can I use a French press for juice?

I know it sounds weird to think of a French press as something beyond the tool to making a great cup of Joe. However, when it comes to whipping up your own juices at home it’s the best tool to use because it’s cheaper than a commercial juicer (saving you hundreds!). It doesn’t take up a ton of counter space and will store away perfectly in a cabinet when you’re not using it. Plus, it’s much easier to clean because there’s very few parts. (Psst: Giving your French press a good wash ensures that the coffee flavor won’t linger on the surface of the jug.)

This hack works on soft fruits that such as peeled, ripe oranges, watermelon chunks, and berries. Naomi Tomky, food writer for The Kitchn, suggests placing about one cup of soft cubed fruit (she used watermelon) in the jug of the French press. Then, squishing the fruit using a pestle or cocktail muddler to start releasing its juices. Once most of the pulp is separated from the juice, place French press plunger on top and press to fully extract the liquid. Afterwards, the juice should be ready pour in a glass, sip, and enjoy without any pulp getting in the way.

Harder fruits and veggies, like carrots and apples, will require to you to use a blender first to break down the fruit before adding it to the French press. The video below shows you how:

Who knew that this handy kitchen tool could also make a delicious homemade juice using your favorite in-season produce? I know my French press will be doing double duty from now on for my morning brew and refreshingly healthy sips!
