Don’t Throw Away an Almost Empty Mustard Jar! Use It to Make This Tasty Condiment

Tags:

We can all relate to the struggle of scooping those last bits of mustard out of an almost empty jar or bottle. Typically, if only a tablespoon or two is left, I’ll throw away the container because the “juice isn’t worth the squeeze.” However, I recently stumbled across a clever hack for using that small amount of mustard in a delicious salad dressing!

How do you get the last bits of mustard out of a jar?

It’s next to impossible to scoop or squeeze out the residual mustard within a container. Fortunately, Yumna Jawad from the Feel Good Foodie Instagram shows us how to remove those tiny bits from a yellow, Dijon, or whole grain mustard container — she simply shakes them up into a vinaigrette!

To try it yourself, simply pour the following ingredients directly into the mustard container, close it, and shake until the dressing is fully combined:

  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • A generous pinch of salt and pepper
  • Additional seasonings such as garlic powder or red pepper flakes (optional)

Afterwards, pour as much or as little dressing as you wish over a bowl of salad greens and dig in! Keep any leftover dressing in the container, store in the fridge, and use in one to two days.

Testing Out This Hack Myself

As someone who uses Dijon mustard in a lot of recipes, discovering this hack couldn’t have been more exciting. Along with the balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, and olive oil, I added a small pinch of garlic powder to the dressing.

The garlic powder’s pungent kick complemented the sweet and acidic flavors of the maple syrup and balsamic vinegar. Drizzled over a spring green mix, this dressing turned it into the perfect salad for lunch.

The measurements for the recipe made less than one cup of dressing, which is enough to dress a few salads. I also can’t wait to try it as a quick marinade for chicken, beef, or pork.

Thanks to this simple hack, I’ll be able to savor every last bit of mustard in an almost empty jar. Plus, I won’t need to scrape the container ever again!
