Princess Diana is remembered for countless amazing qualities, but none continue to shine quite as bright as the motherly love she had for her two boys — something she channeled into some fierce competition while participating in the princes’ annual sports day at school in 1991.
In a short clip, which recently resurfaced on Twitter, footage shows a barefoot Diana trying her darndest to make it across the finish line before other moms participating in the race. According to Harper’s Bazaar, it was a tradition at at Wetherby School, where both William and Harry attended, for the kids to take the sidelines at the end of the day and let parents show off their own athletic skills.
Take a look at the video to see just how much she clearly wanted to win!
The tweet misdates the moment as happening in 1989, although she did do the same sprint that year, too. We also aren’t sure if this technically broke any royal protocols — especially considering it was one of several times the late princess joined in the festivities. In any case, the look on Diana’s face when she comes in second place is pretty priceless. Imagine being the mom who beat a member of the royal family at a silly race!
This look back at Diana also reminds us of the time William, Harry, and Kate gave each other a good-natured run for their money back in 2017. The trio hit the track while visiting members of Team Head’s Together, who were training to participate in that year’s London Marathon.
The princes both clearly inherited their mom’s competitive side! You also have to love the hilarious sibling banter: Harry was no doubt taunting William as he looks back, clearly in the lead. Kate, however, seemed content just to have a fun day horsing around with her hubby and brother-in-law.
With Mother’s Day right around the corner for us here in the US, it’s so sweet to remember these royal apples didn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to Diana and her boys!
