It’s that time of year again, when many of us start to look for ways to shed a few of the extra holiday pounds we put on. There’s no shame in overindulging, of course, especially after the stressful year we’ve all had. But if you’re hoping to melt belly fat, we have good news! Dr. Oz recommends an easy way to whittle your middle while still enjoying delicious food.
More specifically, Dr. Oz claims that using just half a teaspoon of cinnamon, cloves, oregano, cayenne, or turmeric in your daily meals can give you a bloat-blasting boost. Each one is known for tackling inflammation and for blood-stabilizing benefits that can fight off the fat that tends to settle in our midsection. You don’t have to use them all at the same time to get the perks (although that might be a fun flavor experiment), but just pick one to sprinkle each time you sit down to eat. Considering how versatile and tasty they are, it shouldn’t be hard to find ways to include them.
According to Dr. Oz, the spices work against what’s known as visceral fat, which he claims “is biologically active, like a factory churning out hormones and inflammation that help keep us fat and contribute to other health problems.” Noshing on what he calls “carbage” — AKA non-complex carbs like food high in sugar or refined flour — is another contributor to the buildup of this fat. Replacing those with more fresh, healthy ingredients along with the spices should turn things back around.
Keep in mind, spices aren’t magic potions that make inches disappear overnight. However, you can count on even more benefits than just a slimmer middle from each. Cinnamon is well known for helping keep our hearts healthy (but just be sure you’re picking the right one). Cloves are also great for liver health and warding off cancer. Oregano has some of the highest antioxidant levels for an herb, which can boost our immune systems. The extra heat from cayenne makes it another great heart healthy choice. And turmeric can also help you say goodbye to joint pain.
