Spending more time outdoors during the summer can do a number on our hair. From the humidity to chlorine exposure, hair becomes more dry and brittle this time of the year — which results in dandruff. Fortunately, these three natural remedies for dandruff — infused with the season’s nutrient-rich farm stand finds — will revive weathered strands in no time!
Dry and brittle?
Time spent under the hot sun or in a chlorine-filled pool can leave hair looking and feeling straw-like. A blueberry and honey hair mask can help! The berries’ vitamins E and C mend any damage, while humectant honey rehydrates hair.
To do: Mix 1⁄4 cup of mashed blueberries with one tablespoon of honey. Apply to damp hair from roots to ends; rinse after 20 minutes.
An increase in perspiration on the scalp can become a breeding ground for dandruff-causing fungus. Remedy it with a banana and sugar scalp scrub. The fruit’s antimicrobial agents kill fungus and sugar whisks away flakes.
To do: Mix one mashed banana and 3⁄4 cup of sugar. Rub on a damp scalp for one minute; rinse.
The reason humidity leads to frizz? Parched, thirsty locks have raised cuticles, which moisture in the air easily penetrates — an overabundance of which causes hair to swell.
The fix: an avocado and olive oil conditioner! The fruit’s fatty acids hydrate hair and the oil’s amino acids smooth and seal cuticles.
To do: Mix half of a mashed avocado and one teaspoon of olive oil. Apply all over damp hair; rinse after 10 minutes.
