Hair loss can be a sensitive topic, particularly for women. Traditionally seen as a symbol of femininity throughout history, society has an oft-unfair expectation that our locks will remain lush and full, even in our golden years. For the estimated 30 million women in the US living with female pattern hair loss (FPHL), it’s a disheartening fact, to say the least. The solution? HairMax’s Ultima 12 LaserComb ($259, Originally $362, QVC).
This handy little device was designed to treat this specific issue, and if its clinical studies are any indicator? It works.
The LaserComb targets 12 medical-grade lasers at the scalp as you run it through your hair, stimulating follicles along the way in order to reverse thinning and promote growth for those with FPHL — the most common cause of hair loss for women over 40.
With age, our estrogen and progesterone levels begin to fall, which causes hair follicles to shrink. This can lead to our hair falling out more easily, and worse, grow slower, leading to female pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, as it’s otherwise known.
Light lasers, like the ones found in the LaserComb, have been dubbed a safe, effective method of increasing hair density and diameter, proving “significantly superior” to “sham” devices containing red LED pod lights in a 16 and 24-week comparison study published in Lasers in Medical Science in 2019.
A 2014 study of the LaserComb itself, which was published in the International Journal of Trichology, observed 146 men and 188 women. Researchers saw a “statistically significant increase in terminal hair density” of its subjects after 26 weeks of use, three times a week.
What’s more, 88 percent of the study’s patients who were responding poorly or were intolerant of drug treatment, responded positively to the LaserComb.
This FDA-cleared device is also a hit with reviewers. “I’ve been using the Hairmax Comb for a week and a half, and I’ve one inch of hair growth,” one woman wrote on QVC’s website.
Added another: “I am so happy with the HairMax. In a relatively short period of time my thinning hair (age and heredity) became even more thin. I was no longer able to cover the bald areas. I was sick about it. My diet is good, I take vitamins, stress was dealt with, so what else could I do? … In two months [of using the HairMax] my hair growth really jumped. My neighbors noticed and complimented. I am really happy and so grateful that it works. Just like brushing your teeth every day for the rest of your life in order to save your teeth, use the HairMax for the rest of your life to keep your hair.”
This device’s sleek, Italian design features patented hair-parting teeth to get to every area of your scalp, and it’s extremely lightweight (7 ounces), so you won’t have trouble holding it up.
Should you prefer to not use any arm power at all, however, you can try the best-selling HairMax LaserBand ($448, QVC), instead, which works similarly, but is worn as a headband.
For maximum results, use the LaserComb for eight minutes per treatment, three times a week. According to the website, you’ll start to see a difference in about 16 weeks.
