The summer is officially here, and for many of us, the festivities are just getting started. Now that it’s (finally) a season to be social again, many of us are getting back into our normal summer beauty routine.
Stylists and makeup artists agree that having a good, clean set of makeup brushes is a crucial part of any beauty regimen. The thing is, washing your brushes might leave them feeling dry and frayed. Luckily, we found a super simple hack that will help you clean your makeup brushes in a way that will preserve their shelf life and keep them feeling silky — using conditioner.
Conditioner Keeps Makeup Brushes Soft
Knowing how to clean makeup brushes properly is important for more reasons than one. When brushes aren’t cleaned the right way they can harbor bacteria, oils, and other nasties that come in direct contact with your skin, leading to all sorts of unwanted issues, like breakouts and infections — yikes.
But whether you’re using natural or synthetic makeup brushes, washing them can dry out the bristles, making them more course and brittle. The trouble is not only do they end up feeling prickly on your face, but they can even affect how well your makeup is applied to your skin. Soft, silky brush bristles make application and blending easier, and you end up with a smoother look. Adding conditioner to the brushes as your last step during cleaning is the perfect way to keep those bristles nice and smooth.
Conditioner acts the same way on a makeup brush as it does on your hair, adding a layer of protective moisture that seals, smoothes, and softens the bristles. Thankfully, using conditioner on your makeup brushes is really simple. All you have to do is wash your brushes wish soap and water as you normally would, then apply a small amount of conditioner to the bristles. Allow the brushes to sit with the conditioner for one minute. Finally, rinse it out thoroughly to avoid build-up, then let them dry. That’s it! And by the way, it’s generally advised that you wash your brushes every seven to 10 days.
We hope this little trick will help you keep your brushes soft so you can achieve that picture-perfect look every time. Here’s to a clean beauty routine!
